The Norton Pines Story NP Incorporated was established in August of 1995 for the purpose of acquiring Norton Pines. Sue Pemberton as president and sole officer began operating the business in September of 1995, previously holding the General Manager position since September of 1988. The building, originally named Lakeshore Tennis Club, was constructed in 1976. The club consisted of six indoor and three outdoor tennis courts, locker rooms, and lounge area. An outdoor pool was added in 1977, and the conversion of one indoor tennis court to four racquetball courts occurred in 1978. In 1980, the club was leased as Lakeshore Athletic Club for approximately one year before closing its doors for five years. In 1986 the building was reopened as Norton Pines Racquet and Fitness Club. A second indoor tennis court was converted to a fitness training, aerobic and basketball area. In 1988, the Club was purchased again and renamed Norton Pines Tennis & Fitness Club. Fall 1997 we changed the name to Norton Pines Athletic Club. September 1 of 1988, a staffing team headed by General Manager, Sue Pemberton, began the upgrading and improvements of the facilities, programming, and organization. 1989 marked the purchase of additional cardiorespiratory and resistance training equipment, wood floors in the racquetball courts, and glass enclosure of the fitness area. In 1991, the gymnasium was constructed. During the Summer of 1993 four indoor tennis courts were added to the club by the construction of a unique aluminum frame, fabric structure covering our outdoor courts for year round use. In December of '93, a snack bar was added to our lounge and a new front desk in our entrance was built. Early September of '95, just after the purchase of Norton Pines, upgrading of the common areas of the Club began. Both men and women’s locker rooms were refurbished, the carpet was replaced in the entire club and a new roof was installed at the front entrance. Summer of ˜96 all new CYBEX equipment was installed in the weight area. Our new cardio room including Cardio Theater was completed Fall of '96. A new Child Care Center and massage room were also completed in May '97. Summer of ˜97 we added four outdoor tennis courts and Spring '98 the enclosure of our outdoor pool was completed. Fall 2000 and Spring 2001 bring a new roof coating on the entire building and locker room update again. New tile in the showers was completed in Fall 2000. Fall 2001 we installed a new insulated liner and all new lights to our tennis courts 1 through 4. Summer 2002 the gymnasium area insulated liner was installed. New lockers and tanning beds were installed during the Winter of 2002. Another addition, attached to the north end of the building, was completed in June 2002. In this air-conditioned space, we added an aerobic studio, more locker rooms, a multi-purpose room, office space, and a weight room. Free Motion weight equipment was added. The old weight area was converted to a basketball shooting court and parent/child play area. Our child care was also expanded during the Summer of 2002. Summer 2004, courts 5-8 underwent the replacement of our PVC fabric covering as well as having all eight indoor courts resurfaced. During this time the pool received a make-over with a new fiberglass surface and a Riverock deck surrounding the pool. The Riverock was also placed at our entrance to update and restore the walkway. November 2004 Norton Pines was struck by a major fire. We were able to reopen four areas of the club three days after the fire. The back four tennis courts, the pool, child care located at Shoreline Soccer (located just behind Norton Pines) and the fitness facility equipped with our group fitness studio, rev studio, massage room, weight equipment, cardio equipment, and locker rooms. The center of the old building and the front four tennis courts were lost to the fire and were taken down. In October 2005, a new and improved Norton Pines reopened its doors after 11 months of reconstruction.
